Emerging Technologies in Physical Therapy: How Tech Is Redefining Rehab

By Brianna Hall, Director of Development, Medical Billing Center

The physical therapy profession is at a tipping point, one where emerging technologies, data-driven care, and interdisciplinary collaboration are not just reshaping how therapists work, but redefining what’s possible in rehab.

At the recent summit held in Washington, D.C. and Alexandria, Va., leaders from physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and audiology came together with innovators in digital health to explore the future of care. The message was clear: innovation is not a buzzword. It’s a responsibility.

AI, Wearables, and the Rise of Smart Rehab

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept… it’s a copilot in the clinic. As Anang Chokshi, PT, DPT, shared, AI isn’t here to replace clinicians; it’s here to empower them. From pattern recognition to predictive analytics, AI tools are helping therapists make smarter decisions, faster.

Caroline “CJ” Morrow, PT, DPT, emphasized that while data drives insight, it’s our minds, hearts, and intuition that drive care. AI can help us unlock the potential of the data already sitting in our EMRs… data that, until now, has been underutilized.

Wearables are also transforming rehab. From remote monitoring to real-time feedback, these devices are helping patients stay engaged and accountable, while giving clinicians a clearer picture of progress between visits.

Tech with a Human Touch

Technology can reduce administrative burden and expand access to care, but it must be implemented thoughtfully. As APTA CEO Justin Moore, PT, DPT, noted, tech is only as valuable as the professional behind it. In a world saturated with information, patients still crave meaningful human connection. That’s where PTs shine.

At MBC, we believe technology should support… not replace… the clinician’s role. Whether it’s through smarter billing systems, data dashboards, or telehealth integrations, we’re harnessing AI in our role as well to help clinics to improve outcomes and streamline revenue.

New Career Paths, New Possibilities

The summit also spotlighted PTs who are shaping the future of rehab outside the clinic. From population health to entrepreneurship, these professionals are proving that physical therapy expertise is valuable in every corner of healthcare.

Dan Staats, PT, DPT, shared his journey from clinic owner to “Shark Tank” entrepreneur. His advice? Be ready to wear many hats. Innovation requires flexibility, grit, and a willingness to learn new skills, qualities that PTs like you reading this blog, already possess.
